Knock Off (1998)

IMDB rating: 3.90

Plot: It is June of 1997. In 72 hours, Hong Kong will return to Chinese rule after 150 years as a British-ruled colony. Marcus Ray and Tommy Hendricks are sales reps for V SIX Jeans, and they are enjoying life in Hong Kong in this time before the island nation’s transition back to Chinese rule. While Tommy busily prepares for the latest fashion show, Marcus is off looking at knock off goods — imitation watches, jewelry, and baby dolls, in which his longtime friend Eddie Wang and his Hong Kong associate, Skinny Wang, are involved. When Marcus and Tommy’s supervisor Karen Leigh arrives and informs them that much of their last shipment of jeans was filled with knock off imitations, the two can’t believe her, but they agree to help in raiding a warehouse to prove their innocence. After a violent encounter that involves local police Ling Ho and Lieutenant Han, Marcus eventually learns that Tommy is an undercover CIA agent, and so is Karen. Meeting with their boss, agent Harry Johansson, Marcus learns of a conspiracy involving the Russian mafia and their attempts to smuggle tiny, but highly explosive “microbombs” to the worldwide terrorist black market. And these are bombs that explode into green flame when detonated. Marcus, Tommy, and Karen set out to stop the conspiracy and figure out who’s behind it.

Although this is a hard one, I actually think they picked right on this one. That rape scene with Jodie Foster..I liked that her character wasn’t necessarily super-likeable. She had issues for sure, but you wanted her to get justice.

Ladies, would it be harder for you to determine when your man has begun to "take you for granted" if…?
…he started off the relationship modestly, so that there’s not a huge expectation to fall from later?

For example:

He never asked you how your day was.
He never complimented you.
He never told you how much he appreciates you.
He never built up your self esteem.
He never went out of his way for whatever.
etc. etc.

(inspired by an answer to one of my Qs, but I remember this now specifically from "When Harry Met Sally"–can anyone describe the scene (w/lines) I’m talking about, early in the movie? One line will do it: "How come you never ______ anymore.")

Great movie…..

I memorized that line word for word.
Yes really.

HARRY: "When you take someone to the airport… its clearly the beginning of a relationship, Which is why I never take someone to the airport at the BEGINNING of a relationship. Because eventually things move on … and you DON’T take someone to the airport…. and I never wanted anyone to say to me: "How come you don’t take me to the airport anymore!"

NEVER show "over"-appreciation.
She must know that you can choose who you go out with.
This is KEY.

If you build up her status too much … suddenly she will start thinking "OMG!! What do I need THIS guy for…. I can do MUCH better than him" even when YOU CAUSED this to happen.

Make sure your woman knows if she wants a compliment it will have to be earned like anything else she wants from you.

While this makes a guy look like a "jerk"…. you must acknowledge that simply NOT COMPLIMENTING a girl is not even in the same UNIVERSE as "treating her badly".

My DOG is cuter then yours is! | Jan 22, 2010

It probably would be more difficult,yes…but why would someone choose to hook up with such an indifferent guy in the first place? There’s a reason people are so attentive at the beginning of a relationship…usually with out that "hook", people will just move on instead of choosing to commit.
Janineisacoolsouthernchick | Jan 22, 2010

If a man tried to start a relationship up "modestly" by never going out of his way for anything, and never asked me how I was…there would be no relationship with that man and me. I give compliments, I ask about things, I go out of my way to do things for people I care about, men AND women, even if the relationship is only one of friendship. A person like you describe would never become more than a nodding aquaintance of mine. I’d certainly never be friends or lovers with such a person. Obviously that person has no feelings for other people, so why should I try to make him into something he’s not?
Lynn Bodoni | Jan 23, 2010

I would not stay for long in a relationship like that, so I wouldn’t be around long enough to feel "taken for granted."

Calling all thespians… and/or musicians who perform musicals…!?
Hey guys!

I just had a quick question.

Last year, my school put on a production of "Into the Woods," which required 2 violins, 2 violas, a cello and a bass along with various wind instruments.

This year, we’re doing "Little Shop of Horrors" and I was wondering if anyone knows how many violins, violas, cellos, and basses are needed for a pit orchestra.

Thanks!

when my school did the show, they used two keyboards and loads of percussion.

according to the official UK licensing site, there are two versions of the music - the original and the revival, and it’s upto the musical director to deceide which to use. the revival version uses strings

Head Strong: Passing on Limbaugh a business decision
18.10.09
The NFL’s rejecting Rush Limbaugh was a bit like the members of the Merion Cricket Club blackballing Thurston Howell III. The owners’ objection to Limbaugh wasn’t based on his politics - they overwhelmingly share his views. They refused to allow him to join their club in the name of good business.

Consider that over the last 20 years, 78 percent of the approximately $7 million that NFL owners, coaches, players, and their associates have donated to political candidates and committees has gone to Republicans. That’s according to figures recently compiled and studied by the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) in Washington.

The San Diego Chargers ($2,455,200), Houston Texans ($623,456), Arizona Cardinals ($337,096), Washington Redskins ($323,000), and New York Jets ($261,403) organizations were the NFL’s top five political contributors since 1990, the center reported. Four of those teams donated 90 percent or more of their contributions to GOP interests. For the one that didn’t, the Redskins, the figure was 75 percent.

Among the owners, the pattern is even more pronounced. Nearly every dime of the $2 million that Chargers owner Alex Spanos - the league’s most deep-pocketed contributor - has donated over two decades has gone to the GOP. Texans owner Robert McNair, who has given more than $500,000 since 1990, has contributed almost exclusively to Republicans.

Daniel Snyder (Washington Redskins) and Tom Benson (New Orleans Saints) also are big-time GOP donors. And Robert Johnson, owner of the Jets, raised thousands of dollars for George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns.

Interestingly, while the NFL owners have overwhelmingly supported the GOP, there has been a consistent outlier - the same St. Louis Rams that Limbaugh sought to own. No team has donated more to Democratic candidates and causes over the last two decades than the Rams.

Officials associated with the team gave $230,050 to D’s - 98 percent of team-associated political giving. (The Los Angeles Rams contributed an additional $47,250 - 90 percent of their total donations - to Democrats before leaving the City of Angels in 1995.)

Current Rams majority owner Chip Rosenbloom has given $13,100 to Democratic candidates over the last decade. His mother, Georgia Frontiere, who owned the team after her husband’s death in 1979, donated more than $134,000 to Democratic interests between 1997 and her death in 2008.

There have been a few exceptions. Rosenbloom and his mother each logged a contribution to one Republican presidential candidate during the 2008 cycle - the most moderate in the field. Rosenbloom donated $1,000 to Rudy Giuliani in June 2007. Three months earlier, his mother had given $2,300 to John McCain. Neither candidate was high on Limbaugh’s presidential wish list.

One wonders if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s negative assessment of Limbaugh’s bid ("I would not want to see those comments coming from people who are in a responsible position in the NFL - absolutely not") were predicated on knowledge that his role would ultimately not sit well with Rosenbloom. The NFL itself has had to hedge the bets of its GOP-dominated owners.

"The National Football League - we’re talking people who work for the league, who are league leaders, all the way up to the commissioner - the National Football League itself has actually donated more to Democrats than to Republicans," CRP’s Dave Levinthal, who wrote the analysis, told me. "It’s about a 70/30 split."

Only one owner was prepared to say he would not support the inclusion of Limbaugh. But given that Goodell is their hire, common sense dictates he would not have voiced negativity unless more than one held that view. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said he wouldn’t vote for Limbaugh because of the host’s "inappropriate, incendiary, and insensitive" commentary.

But it was the owner of a basketball franchise who came closest to explaining why the Limbaugh role failed. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, whom the NBA has fined almost $2 million for his own verbal and behavioral incidents, blogged that the NFL should be "terrified" not of things Limbaugh has already said, but of "what he might say AFTER he was an approved investor in the St. Louis Rams."

"Given that we will never know what the ‘next big issue’ in this world that Rush will be discussing on his show is, it’s impossible for the NFL to even try to predict or gauge the impact on the NFL’s business if something controversial, or even worse yet, something nationally polarizing happens. There is an unquantifiable risk that comes with the size of Rush’s audience," Cuban wrote on his blog.

He’s right. The substance of the most widely cited Rush-isms - the infamous McNabb quote and his comparison of the NFL to "a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons" - fails to demonstrate any overt racism. And it’s doubtful that any of his political leanings would alienate this crowd, given how they themselves have donated.

Instead, the owners determined that it was just bad business to add to their ranks someone who would have kept them in headlines going forward while most choose to fly beneath the radar.

"This is about the future of the United States of America and what kind of country we’re going to have," Limbaugh said last week, casting the debate as some kind of a referendum on capitalism. But he was wrong.

To the contrary, Limbaugh was compromised by the very principles he espouses - the free market. A group of like-minded private businessmen, unfettered by government, made a decision as to what was best for their enterprise.

What helps really bad period cramps?
Nothing I have tried works.
Pulling my legs up to my chest, eating bananas, I can’t take pills, a hot pad, nothing. And these cramps are so bad that I’m actually screaming in pain. So please, please tell me what can help, because I can feel them starting already.

Drink some hot tea, go on a walk before they start hurting alot… dont drink soda … im going to look at this later im having bad cramps too!
Numa | Feb 08, 2010

What do you mean you cant take pills? Do you mean you cannot take any medication, or that you cant take the birth control pill? If it’s the second then get decent painkillers with codeine - Paramol or Solpadeine Max. You can get soluble ones if you dont like swallowing pills. Taste pretty rotten but it’s worth it for the pain relief. If you are in the USA you need to ask your doctor for this kind of medication. There are no home remedies that are going to make a difference to severe pain, so if you cant buy the pain pills see your doctor.
Magenta | Feb 08, 2010

You need to see the doctor asap. That is the sign of trouble right there. I have severe cramps and the doctor has told me that if the pain gets to the point of screaming something is malfunctioning. Since you can’t take pills you need something your doctor can perscribe you. I can not imagine my period with out midol. I’d kill someone I think.

Take 4 Advil…..that will help. The standard 2 Advil don’t do it. Don’t over do it with any type of medicine, you can damage your liver/kidneys! Exercise helps too, if you can manage any! Hang in there, it will get better!
dvs91856 | Feb 08, 2010

I don’t know why (obviously) you can’t take pills but if your period pain is that bad (and mine are horrendous, truly passing-out horrendous, I can barely converse when they’re at their worst) then you would have to take pills because although things like heat pads. B vitamins, E vitamins, potassium etc, gentle exercise (I’ve heard- I try this month after month and always give up because it’s too painful to move) help, if they’re that bad only painkillers will work. I usually take tramadol, cocodamol and mefenamic acid which you’ll need to get a prescription for. You can get a weaker form of cocodamol without a prescription and you can get naproxen or diclofenac over the counter too so these might be worth a try. Whatever you actual take, make sure you’re taking an analgesic (painkiller, so paracetamol/codeine/tramadol etc) and an anti-inflammatory (naproxen/mefenamic acid/Voltarol- also known as diclofenac) together because the analgesic will deaden the feeling of pain while the anti-inflammatory will help with the cause of the pain. Stagger them so you take one type first then the other 2 or 3 hours later because this will prevent you from having periods of time where there’s nothing active at all working on you.
Voltarol/diclofenac can be bought as a gel which might work but I’d check with the pharmacist before I actually paid for it whether it would work this way for period pain because it’s usually used that way for joint pain but really a gel is just another way to get the active ingredient into your system so you could try that and take soluble paracetamol as well. You can also get some painkillers in suppository form which I know isn’t very pleasant but you’ll know as well as I do that you’d stick Mount Everest up there if you knew it would help! You would have to get a prescription for that though I think.
Pulling your legs up to your chest, by the way, feels like it will help but is actually counter-productive- period pains are caused by your uterus contracting to get the unwanted endometrium out and pulling your legs up like that just restricts the area and amount of movement, and potentially the oxygen supply too, available to your uterus. I know it somehow feels better when you do that but in actuality it doesn’t help at all. You’d also be better to take a supplement with potassium in it rather than eating bananas because you’d be getting a reliable amount of it every time. Bananas (and actually nearly all fruit and veg) have widely varying amounts of minerals/vitamins in them depending on how they’re farmed- the more intensively they’re farmed the lower the levels of these tend to be. These levels also start to fall as soon as the fruit or veg is picked and you don’t know truly know how fresh the banana you’re eating is. I’d definitely advise that you saw a doctor though because there are other ways of taking painkillers than pills, it’s just that most of these tend to need a prescription.

Problems with a C++ codes!!!?
Hi again!

I’m struggling with this program and would love someone to take a look to see where it’s going wrong!!!

The idea of it is to read data from a txt file, and to produce a screen report showing which sales person had the best and poorest sales figures for each month and the value of the sales that each made.

I’ve managed to create it, it runs, but it’s showing a nill value for each result!

The code used is:

#include <stdio.h>

const char filename[]="C:\\users\\daz\\desktop\\sales4.txt";

const int range =12;
int a [range];

int largest,smallest;

FILE *fp;

main()
{
if ((fp = fopen(filename,"r"))==NULL)
printf("error opening file\n");
else
{
printf("\n\n\t");
for (int i=0;i<range;i++)
{
fscanf(fp,"%d",&a[i]);
printf("%3d",a[i]);

}
largest=0;
smallest=1000;

for (int i=0;i<range;i++)
{
if (a[i]>largest)
{
largest=a[i];

}
if (a[i]<smallest)
{
smallest=a[i];

}
}

printf("\n\n\tLargest value is %3d ",largest);
printf("\n\n\tSmallest value is %3d ",smallest);
}
getchar();
}

The txt files used is:

Sam 724 815 645 324 366 245 471 678 645 861 745 655
Mary 1223 1067 756 434 555 629 877 1477 977 749 834 766
Paul 1012 676 787 666 456 782 1263 962 602 794 834 918
Imran 655 861 467 486 555 239 666 491 293 466 481 739
ZZZZZ

Any ideas/pointers on why it’s showing a nill value?

Cheers!

I didn’t try to run your code but I expect that you are getting nills because fscanf(fp,"%d",&a[i]) would only read the first word of every line, which is a text with the person’s name, and it won’t succeed to read it with the format specifier "%d" (that’s for integers).

You should change your code to read 12 numbers in every line, not to read 12 lines like it does currently. I also expect that you need to compare the employees in every month, so you might require a 2-dimensional array to hold the entire table and compare the employees month by month.

EDIT:
I was wrong about the behavior of scanf, sorry. You should just avoid reading the name with a "%d" format specifier and the rest of the line will be read as 12 integers. This is how I fixed it:

char name[16];

if ((fp = fopen (filename, "r")) == NULL)
printf ("error opening file\n");
else
{
printf ("\n\n\t");
fscanf (fp, "%s", name); // read in the name
for (int i = 0; i < range; i++)
{
fscanf (fp, "%d", &a[i]);
printf ("%6d", a[i]);

}

Dreams to Dream

Dreams to dream
In the dark of the night
When the world goes wrong
I can still make it right
I can see so far in my dreams
I’ll follow my dreams
Until they come true

Come with me
You will see what I mean
There’s a world inside
No one else ever sees
You will go so far in my dreams
Somewhere in my dreams
Your dreams will come true

There is a star
Waiting to guide us
Shining inside us
When we close our eyes

Don’t let go
If you stay close to me
In my dreams tonight
You will see what I see
Dreams to dream
As near as can be
Inside you and me
They always come true

The Girl You Left Behind

TANYA:
Do you ever miss the girl you left behind?

Is the girl you left behind out there tonight romancin’?
Makin’ eyes at someone else and singin’, is she dancin’?
Only the girl you left behind is real when you’re sleepin’
Puts the teardrops in your eyes from secrets she is keepin’
Happy just playin’ a tune and dance the whole night away
Hope the girl you left behind will be there for you someday
Lonely is the wind that blows, you know you’ll always miss her
Lonely is a lover’s heart, if only you could
Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her

All the girls you left behind could fill up California
Please don’t leave them too darn long, I think I oughtta warn ya
Absence makes the heart go cold and makes a heart to wander
If you stay there by their sides, you’ll feel their hearts grow fonder

CATS:
Hope you see her someday
Hope I find my way
Back to the girl I left behind

TANYA & (CATS):
So tell me you will never roam
(We swear we won’t go roaming)
You’ll be by your fireside
(We’ll all be home sweet home and kiss her, kiss her, kiss her)

TANYA:
So where’s the girl you left behind?

CATS:
She’s waitin’ for her sister
We won’t stop until we’re home we’ll hug and hug and kiss her
I’ll find the girl
I’ll find the girl
I’ll find the girl
I’ll find the girl

ALL:
You’ll (I’ll) find the girl
You’ll (I’ll) find the girl you (I) left behind
Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!
That’s right
Alright!

Why should special interest groups protest raids and our laws being enforced?
Why do they think raids and deportations should cease until immigration reform is brought up?
What if our officials keep putting off this reform that will likely not pass, do they actually think our laws should not be enforced?
So you agree these groups should be prosecuted for interfering with our laws being enforced?

Protest quickly staged after raid leads to 7 being detained
Casa de Maryland says Hondurans are in custody

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials detained seven people from Honduras after a raid Thursday in Anne Arundel County, prompting a demonstration outside the Baltimore Federal Building.

ICE spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs confirmed that an enforcement action took place and that seven Hondurans were in custody.

She said that because the investigation is continuing, she could provide only limited information. Fobbs did not disclose the name of the business where the Hondurans were working or the location of the business.

Protesters gathered outside the Federal Building in Baltimore late Thursday afternoon. About 15 people held signs and shouted slogans, including, "Reform not raids" and "Stop separating families."

Leaders of Casa de Maryland, advocates for immigrants’ rights, said they were told that seven males, one of them a juvenile, were taken into custody at a Hanover restaurant.

Elizabeth Alex, Casa’s lead organizer for the Baltimore region, said there haven’t been many workplace raids under the Obama administration. Advocates had hoped that raids would stop until comprehensive immigration reform can be achieved.

"We’re unhappy we’re seeing a return to Bush-era policy," Alex said.

"We would hope immigration enforcement would be reserved for people who are criminals," she said later.

The protesters hoped that the detainees would be released on their own recognizance or be permitted to meet with legal counsel within 24 hours.

Alex said that people who have been detained after raids might be given contact information for lawyers but might not necessarily reach them before they are sent to detention centers in York, Pa., or on the Eastern Shore.

"Due process is part of the foundation of this country," said Gustavo Andrade, senior organizing director of Casa de Maryland.

Lawyers for Casa waited 90 minutes in the ICE offices before they were told that they would not be allowed to meet with the detainees, Alex said.

because raids are pointless and a waste of money without reform

pro-illegals like the answers here are afraid their family will get what is coming to them for disobeying the law. These people have no idea the difference in right and wrong. Our laws need enforced on these invaders.
